The best professional headshot tips you will ever receive have nothing to do with being photogenic and everything to do with being prepared.
That is the single most important thing I want every client to know before they step in front of my camera. As a Washington DC branding and headshot photographer, I have worked with hundreds of professionals, including executives, consultants, attorneys, accountants, and creatives, and the ones who walk away with images they truly love are not the ones who are “naturally good on camera.” They are the ones who showed up rested, dressed thoughtfully, and trusted the process.
This guide covers everything you need to know before your headshot session so you can feel calm, confident, and ready. Because when you are prepared, the results show.

What to Expect During a Professional Headshot Session
Most of my corporate and professional headshot sessions take place in an office environment using my portable studio setup. I bring everything on site: a professional backdrop, Profoto studio lighting, and an adjustable backless posing stool. You do not need to travel to a studio. I come to you.
Here is what the experience actually looks like.
Sessions are short and efficient. A headshot session typically runs just five to ten minutes per person. That might sound fast, but it is by design. You do not need more time than that. A focused, well-lit, well-directed session produces better results than an hour of trying to figure it out together. My job is to make every minute count.
You will have multiple portrait options. Depending on your needs, sessions can include seated portraits (shoulders up), standing full body portraits, or standing three quarter body portraits. Each option gives you a different look and level of context for how you plan to use the image.
I handle all of the posing direction. You do not need to know what to do with your hands, how to position your shoulders, or which angle is most flattering for your face. That is my job. I will guide you through every single detail: posture, hand placement, chin position, and more. You will never have to guess or feel awkward.
You will leave with multiple expressions. I capture both smiling and neutral expressions during every session. This gives you flexibility depending on where the image is being used. A warm smile works beautifully for LinkedIn, while a polished neutral expression is perfect for a corporate directory or speaker bio.
For example, the clean white background headshots I created for CPAmerica and the classic blue background portraits for SAAB were all captured using this same portable studio approach, right on site at their offices. A consistent, professional result every time, regardless of the venue.

Professional Headshot Tips: What to Wear
Clothing is one of the most important parts of your preparation, and it is entirely within your control. Here is what works best on camera.
Colors That Photograph Well
Solid, light shades and neutral tones are always your safest and most polished choice. Think navy, charcoal gray, black, white, and soft muted tones. These colors read as professional and clean against a studio backdrop without competing with your face for attention.
Small, subtle patterns like a fine pinstripe or a delicate texture can work well too. What to avoid: bright, saturated colors and large, bold patterns. These tend to draw the eye away from your expression and can cause visual distraction in the final image.
Fit and Comfort Matter More Than You Think
Well-fitting clothing photographs significantly better than oversized or too-tight pieces. You want to feel comfortable, because comfort translates directly to ease in front of the camera. If you are tugging at a collar or feeling self-conscious in a new outfit, it will show.
Layers add polish and dimension. A blazer, cardigan, or structured jacket instantly elevates a look and photographs beautifully. Even a simple blouse or collared shirt under a blazer goes a long way.
Keep Accessories Minimal and Understated
Simple, classic jewelry and accessories always work well. Large statement pieces or anything with high shine can reflect light or pull focus. When in doubt, go minimal.

Hair and Makeup Guidelines for Your Headshot
Another easy professional headshot tips are hair and makeup. The goal with hair and makeup is to look like the best version of yourself on your best day, not a dramatically different version of yourself.
Hair: Come to your session with clean, styled hair. Think about how you typically wear your hair at work or in professional settings. Avoid trying anything drastically new right before your session. Fresh blowouts are wonderful. Elaborate updos or experimental styles can feel off when paired with business attire and a studio backdrop.
Makeup: Light, professional makeup photographs beautifully. A polished, natural look is exactly what you want. Heavy contouring and dark lip colors can read as dramatic on camera, and high-gloss lips tend to pick up reflections from studio lighting. Keep it clean and close to what you wear on an everyday professional basis.
Facial hair: If you have facial hair, make sure it is freshly groomed before your session. A tidy, intentional look always photographs better than something that feels in between stages.

How to Prepare in the Days Before Your Professional Headshot Session
These professional headshot tips might seem small, but they make a real difference in how you look and feel in front of the camera.
Get a good night of sleep. Tired eyes are visible on camera. There is no editing trick that fully replaces rest. Aim for a full night of sleep before your session day.
Stay hydrated. Well-hydrated skin looks more even and healthy in photographs. Start drinking water the day before and keep it up on the morning of your session.
Eat a light meal one to two hours before your session. Showing up on an empty stomach can make you feel shaky or unfocused. A light, balanced meal will keep your energy stable and help you feel grounded going into the session.
Give yourself time to arrive. Rushing to a headshot session is one of the fastest ways to feel tense on camera. Build in a few extra minutes to settle in, touch up, and take a breath before we get started.

How Your Final Images Are Delivered
After your session, you have two options for how your final images are selected and delivered.
Option one: I select and edit the final images. This is the faster turnaround option. I review the session images, select the strongest shots that represent you well, and deliver the fully edited finals. This is a great choice for corporate groups or anyone who prefers a streamlined process.
Option two: You choose your favorites from a proof gallery. I send you a gallery of lightly processed proofs and you select the images you want edited. This gives you more personal input over the final result. If you go this route, I strongly recommend setting a deadline for yourself, because it is easy to overthink it. Most people find that their first instinct is usually the right one.
Both options result in the same high-quality, professionally retouched final images. The difference is simply in who makes the selection and when.

Why Preparation Is the Real Secret to a Great Headshot
These professional headshot tips are the key to a strong, polished headshot. It is being prepared.
When you show up rested, dressed in something that fits well and feels professional, with hair and makeup that reflects your everyday best, you have already done 80 percent of the work. I handle the rest. The lighting, the backdrop, the posing direction, the expressions, the editing. All of it.
A headshot session is five to ten minutes. But the image you walk away with can represent you on LinkedIn, your company website, conference materials, and speaker profiles for years. That is worth a little preparation.
